It&#039;s self-perpetuating too because heads of Women&#039;s/Gender Studies departments are more likely to approve research students whose &#039;interests&#039; are similar to theirs. I wonder how many potential PhD, etc students get turned down because their areas of interest might be considered &#039;imperialist&#039;.</description>

Sadly, they can, and they don&#039;t even have to try very hard. Go to any comment thread discussing the Muslim world and you will encounter exactly those sentiments.  For some people, it seems, virtually nothing happens in the world without Western imperialism, past or present, being somehow responsible. It&#039;s almost as if they are denying agency to non-Westerners. But that couldn&#039;t be right.</description>
