John McCain isn’t happy with Trump’s attacks on Khizr and Ghazala Khan.
Mr McCain, a war veteran and the party’s 2008 presidential nominee, thanked the Khan family for immigrating to America, adding “we’re a better country because of you.”
“I cannot emphasize enough how deeply I disagree with Mr. Trump’s statement,” Mr McCain said in a statement.
“I hope Americans understand that the remarks do not represent the views of our Republican Party, its officers, or candidates.”
Ah no. Sorry but that claim is dead in the water. You can’t say that when the guy who made the remarks is the Republican candidate for president. You’re stuck with them, because you’re stuck with him.
Mr Trump took to Twitter on Monday to criticise the Khans for appearing on television, adding that the story was not about Khizr Khan, but rather “radical Islamic terrorism” and the US.
Mr Trump’s former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski also defended his former boss, saying Captain Khan would still be alive if the billionaire was president “because he would’ve never engaged in a war that didn’t directly benefit this country”.
He’s yours, Republicans.
…I’m sure he’d like to think that those remarks do not represent the view of the Republican party. IIRC he hasn’t actually jumped on the Trump boat. After all, prior to this Trumpenfuhrer called McCain a loser for being a POW.

McCain endorsed Trump back in May, even after Trump called him a loser.
It’s better than nothing, I guess, but still disappointing. McCain will probably get braver about denouncing Trump after August 30, when the Republican Senate primary is held in Arizona — until then, he’s more worried about alienating Trump fans in his home state than in doing the right thing.
Which I really don’t get. McCain’s political career is all but over. He’s not going to get another shot at the White House. At most he’ll get another six-year term in the Senate. What does he hope to accomplish in those six years, even with a Republican majority and a Republican president, that would make it worth sacrificing his integrity like this? If he’s so worried about losing his re-election, just retire — he’s put in years of service to his country both in politics and the military, he and his wife are loaded and can live comfortably. If any Republican politician can afford to speak out against Trump, it’s him.
But I guess that’s McCain for you — a mixed bag at the best of times. He had a noble moment in the 2008 campaign where he explained to a rabid supporter that no, Senator Obama is not a Muslim, he’s a loyal and proud American who I just happen to disagree with on policy. But that’s the same campaign where he decided to elevate Sarah Palin to prominence.
