None of whom were able to attend
About that history conference where out of 30 speakers a mere 30 were men…
In organizing the recent Applied History conference, we invited a number of distinguished female historians to give papers, none of whom was able to attend. In the end, just under 24% of conference participants were women.

I’ve heard that before. What you do then is ask more.
Please name all the women you invited and all the men you invited in a big list and Twitter will judge whether you went far enough with your efforts, won’t we, Twitter?

Were some of them in your head Niall

The key word there is ‘distinguished’. You *pre-vetted* according to criteria you lot had decided in advance were valid. Criteria that you all personally benefited from in order to get there. Social reproduction. How often do we need to explain this??

To historians at that!
Does ‘distinguished’ mean you did not invite any junior female faculty, whereas your program contains a number of junior male faculty?

So many they forgot to ask.

The academic equivalent of “I can’t be racist; some of my best friends are black!”
Maybe they all had to wear those sweaters with the leather elbow patch-thingies and smoke pipes. Nothing says “distinguished” like a pipe.
What is the history being applied to, anyhow?
Men, appaz.
Well, now that Tillerson’s out, Ivanka is apparently taking State Department meetings (at least with the South Koreans). So, that’s…one for women?
Seth, it’s more like…for one woman.
“we invited a number of distinguished female historians to give papers”
This is perhaps not fair of me, but I can’t but think of the line from the Simpsons; “Zero. Zero is a number!”
