(Also, what difference does he suppose it will make if people “remember” that he thinks he’s entitled to a third term in defiance of the 22d amendment? They can’t give it to him by voting this year, but they could deny it to him by voting for the other fella.)

Well he is entitled to ask which means run for office, and we’re entitled to turn him down.
Harald – Nothing real. Presidents are limited to two terms. He’s been saying all along that he might go for three, haw haw – sometimes as a joke, sometimes as a joke but also a provocation, and sometimes as a threat. Of course it’s never really clear how seriously he means it – including in his own mind, I’m sure. He’s not clear about anything, so how could we be clear about his intentions?
Sometimes he explains why he’s “entitled” to an extra term – and it’s all about the usual: coup plot, spying on My Campaign, yadda yadda. Psychopathic lies and chaos-sowing.

My parsing of this “logic” goes like this:
Since OBAMA and the DEMOCRATS SPIED on my campaign, I’m OWED 4 more years AUTOMATICALLY. If I’m DENIED that 4 more years, there will be CONSEQUENCES! RIGGED ELECTION!! MAIL VOTE FRAUD!!! SPACE FORCE!!!!

Arghh. I’m back. That was scary. Trump wants everyone to forget that there were legitimate concerns about the close ties between the Trump campaign and Russia, and that any monitoring of those ties counts as SPYING. This is supposed somehow mean he’s entitled to a “do-over” because the other guys were “cheating.”
As far as “(NON)FRIENDLY TRANSFER OF GOVERNMENT,” at the time of the inauguration, I believe that Melania took the brunt of that from her husband. And given Trump’s penchant for projection, this looks to be a clear sign of his own forthcoming “(NON)FRIENDLY TRANSFER OF GOVERNMENT” and “WENT FOR A COUP.” (And if Obama “went for a coup,” it was the shittiest coup ever. Just sayin’.)
About this “(NON)FRIENDLY TRANSFER OF GOVERNMENT”; I seem to recall Trump waxing lyrical over the ‘beautiful’ letter that Obama wrote to him. Not a mention of unfriendliness at all. Mind you, whether anybody actually read it to him was never disclosed, so he might just have been guessing at the content.
Besides that, weren’t there stories from the transition period about the incoming administration staff refusing to work with – and learn from – the outgoing staff, openly mocking them, calling them ‘losers’ and so-on, and in some cases literally creating walls of boxes to seperate themselves from the people who knew what they were doing? So, yes, it was a rather (non)friendly transfer, just not lin the direction Trump claims.
Trump uses “jokes” as trial balloons.
1. Suggest doing some crazy thing (like seeking a third term.). If there’s pushback, insist you were joking.
2. Repeat the “joke.” If there’s further pushback, just claim you’re doing it to piss off the libs.
3. Keep repeating it, until it becomes just another partisan dispute. (“Trump claims he’s entitled to a third term, Democrats say the Constitution prohibits it, who can say who’s right?”)
4. Actually take steps to implement it. Watch to see if there’s pushback from fellow Republicans. If yes, go back to 2.
5. Proceed to implement, and dare anyone to stop you.
AoS, even if nobody read Trump the letter, Obama’s handwriting is quite beautiful and he no doubt used fancy stationary. So – I can’t believe I’m saying this – Trump is right, it is literally a beautiful letter.
Catwhisperer, I have no doubt that you’re right about the letter but I seriously doubt that Trump has your appreciation of the aesthetics.
I suspect that for Trump, it’s far simpler; any letter that isn’t regarding legal action against him is a beautiful letter. Rare, too, no doubt.
