I wonder how non-human creatures manage that “notion,” Sally. When all you have is a hammer, everything is a nail — likewise when your main tool is sociology, everything is a social construct.
A senior University of Sheffield professor is facing criticism for a slew of tweets including one which asked if “transphobic lesbians” can be “shaggable”, an investigation by The Tab Sheffield can reveal.
Sally Hines, Chair of Sociology at the university, has been accused of homophobia and faced calls for a disciplinary probe over some of her comments on the transgender debate. …
When challenged, Hines defended herself by claiming that she herself is “queer”.
I read some of the replies to the tweet in the OP. Lots of great responses, including Sall Grover’s “In a strong field, this is the stupidest thing you’ve ever said”.
I also looked at that Tab article linked in #3. Great Minnie Fisking¹, that was something. “Right wing blokes pretending to be feminists; feminists pretending to be lesbians; lesbians pretending to be homosexual. Jesus wept indeed! And *I’m* a social constructionist!!”
She claims binary sex is a first world notion… while discussing African nations making policy on binary sex over first worlder’s protests. How is it possible to be so self-blind?
In some cultures, today and in the past, men or women who didn’t meet or follow strict gender norms — particularly effeminate male homosexuals or female warriors — would cause enough confusion to be classified as something other than a normal male or female. Cultures which were very strict regarding proper roles were therefore able to make sense of the nonconformists. They still recognized them as physical males and females, but they were thought to have the soul or spirit of the opposite sex.
More egalitarian, flexible, or open-minded societies — including the dreaded Western ones — had little to no problem recognizing variation within the sexes. A gay man is every bit of a man. It doesn’t throw everything off to recognize that. Inventing new categories is regressive; it actually pushes society into rigid thinking again.

Ah yes, brown people are magic, but also can’t observe and think. It’s like ancient aliens meets goop, but with even more racism.
Entertaining takedown of Sally Hines from five years ago in a student newspaper. Here’s a sample:

And one day, no doubt, it will come packaged in a single handy volume and made available in every hotel room.
