Next year in DC

I mentioned this in a comment but in case you didn’t see that: CFI is doing a Women and Secularism conference in Washington DC next May 18-20.

Speakers will include (in alphabetical order) Ophelia Benson, Jamila Bey, Greta Christina, Elisabeth Cornwell, Margaret Downey, Annie Laurie Gaylor, Jennifer Michael Hecht, Sikivu Hutchinson, Susan Jacoby, Jennifer McCreight, Wafa Sultan, and Rebecca Watson.

Be there.

Perhaps I will do a talk on sexist epithets…

OMGF! I absolutely HAVE to be there! I’ll put it on my calendar right away. Thanks for the heads-up, Ophelia :)

Is that Margaret Downey Australian? As in Marg Downey? As in former Fast Forward member?

Answer my own question. No, no it’s not. Chalk this up as a prime example of ignorance of people worth knowing of on my part.

Well, better the Jerusalem, I guess.

If not you, who? If not then, when?

Is that Elisabeth Cornwell as in”Kay Scarpetta”?

That’s one stunning lineup! I’ll move heaven and earth (well, earth anyway!) to be there!

No, that would be Patricia Cornwell.

Did you notice the comments there?

That line up of ‘radical feminist ‘ women speakers is already acaring some people. The movement is going to be torn asunder and things will never be the same again. smirk.

“Radical feminist” — someone who doesn’t give me a cookie for saying those “liberal feminists” aren’t so bad. I mean, they’re still “just for women” and all, so I don’t have a dog in that fight, but at least they’re not fucking bitches.

[Note: that is sarcasm. I am a woman who is a radical feminist by these guys’ standards. So is my husband, for that matter.]

    Oy. I’ve seen them now.

    The stupid…..

There are many women in the secular community who strongly disagree with the values, ideologies and assumptions of radical feminism (e.g. Miranda Celeste Hale, Abbie Smith, Paula Kirby, Jennifer Keane, Christina Rad, etc…). If you exclude these voices, the conference will only succeed in alienating a lot of people.

“Exclude” – as if it were all a plot. I was invited to this conference in mid-April – long before the Recent Disturbances.

I think we might need a new acronym to parallel SIWOTI — SISOTI. This level of stupid is why I don’t read a lot of the skeptical forums, although I guess it’s possible they’ve cleaned up their act and are less of a boys’ club.

SISOTI and Tpyos, god of typos – I call this a productive morning.

I think the internet (and apparently some members of the CFI) would be better served if everyone on the list had a descriptive after their name (radical feminist, misandrist, misogynist, drunk with power, drunk with gin etc), that way, those of us who see the speaker’s list as people would know who to dislike. That way, none of us would have to think.

    PS This is a joke

    Heh.

Trouble is, mine would be so long. I’m so many things, with so many boring “on the other hand”s and similar qualifications.

If I were feeling snarky, I’d say something about the need for inviting plantation owners and house negroes to all abolitionist meetings.

I must admit I’d missed the memo that said all these women were unwelcome at the conference. Hell, I haven’t even been told that my penis makes me unqualified to attend. I don’t know what Rad does for a living, but I’m sure she’d love to leave Hungaromania for another meeting if someone paid her way. I suggest these poor people, who’re so afraid of being excluded, take up a collection for her.

Not to worry, we’ll all be straightened out soon. Abbie’s planning to do a post on “the ridiculousness of the CFI conference.”

I look forward to being called a cunt and a twat and a fucking bitch along with Jamila Bey, Margaret Downey, Annie Laurie Gaylor, Sikivu Hutchinson, Susan Jacoby, and Wafa Sultan…and of course The Evil Demon Rebecca Watson.

    one can hope!

anyway, I’m absolutely looking forward to this, especially to hear Ophelia and Greta Christina; it’s all sorts of convenient to have so many awesome women in one spot
