Troops are patrolling the streets
Myanmar’s military has seized power after detaining Aung San Suu Kyi and other democratically elected leaders. Communications are limited, troops are patrolling the streets and a one-year state of emergency has been declared.

The army’s move follows a landslide election win for Ms Suu Kyi’s party in November. She has urged her supporters to “protest against the coup”. In a letter written in preparation for her impending detention, she said the military’s actions would put the country back under a dictatorship.
The military has already announced replacements for a number of ministers.
They gave civilian government nine whole years.
While we can, and should, condemn the military coup, I think we would do well to continue to use Burma as the country’s name. Myanmar was imposed after the 1989 coup, and by using Myanmar we are reinforcing the validity of that coup.
I always do, it’s the Beeb who called it the coup name.
As does every other news outlet. Grates my gears how dictators are always given a free pass.
Sad news. Of course, her administration was not much better for the horrors facing the Rohingya. Proof that gentle, kind Buddhism can be pretty awful, too (the Dalai Lama was basically a dictator in a theocracy before the CCP kicked him out). But yeah, the generals are worse. At least they are open and proud of their corruption and violence. :(
