Graham’s pledge

We’re on a knife edge, it appears.

That’s terrifying. On the other hand Haberman seems to have overlooked something. Lindsay Graham made an actual promise on CNN this morning.

Sen. Lindsey Graham gave a stern warning Sunday to President Donald Trump against firing special counsel Robert Mueller.

“As I said before, if he tried to do that, that would be the beginning of the end of his presidency,” the South Carolina Republican said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

Mueller can only be fired for cause, he said, and he sees no cause.

Graham called for Mueller to be able to carry out his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election “independent of any political influence.”

“I pledge to the American people, as a Republican, to make sure that Mr. Mueller can continue to do his job without any interference,” he said.

Now to hold him to it.

Meh. After he fires Mueller, Trump will just tear up the Iran nuclear deal and start gearing up for war with Iran. Lindsay Graham will forgive anything if he gets the chance to bomb a nation of brown people.

Graham is a Republican….’step across that line, no, THAT line, uh how about THAT line.’

Cut taxes for the rich, hand power to theocrats, pack the courts, suppress the vote, appease the NRA. He can get away with anything while keeping up that drumbeat.

Graham has proved to have all the spine of a jellyfish in his opposition to Trump before, and I don’t doubt that he will be just as courageous as consistent now as he has been in the past. Somehow, every line in the sand Lindsey Graham draws always seems to be done far out on the beach at low tide; soon, there’s no sign of it.

Lindsay Graham makes me think of Tammany Young (playing Everett Ricks) in “It’s a Gift”:

Harold : [seeing Everett has stood by, allowing the toddler Elwood to open the spigot on the molasses barrel] What did you let him turn the molasses on for?

Everett : I told him I wouldn’t do it if I was him.

And Graham is likely to be no more effective. So, like the general store in the movie, soon this country may have a sign on it “Closed on account of molasses”.
