They said they rushed in

It seems the reaction to the school massacre wasn’t as swift as it might have been.

Javier Cazares, a father whose 9-year-old daughter was killed in the massacre, said that officials have been misrepresenting the response of law enforcement during the shooting at Robb Elementary.

“They said they rushed in and all that, we didn’t see that,” said Mr. Cazares, who was outside the school during the attack and heard gunshots.

He saw police officers evacuating children, but grew angry, he said, when he did not see officers enter the school immediately. Mr. Cazares wanted to rush in himself to help his daughter, Jacklyn, saying he would carry his little girl out himself, but they told him to let them do their work.

Or not do it.

They no doubt had their reasons, but still.

Mr. Cazares said he spoke with Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas at a news conference Wednesday and told him that the police responded more slowly than officials had told the news media. During the news conference, Beto O’Rourke, a Democrat running for governor, was quickly escorted out after interrupting the proceedings.

“That swiftness at the school would have been awesome,” he said.

Well you see O’Rourke wasn’t carrying a huge gun and a backpack full of ammunition.

Of all the names I have seen of the victims, none stand out as being WASP. Maybe, maybe not, but with the racist policing in USA, you can never be sure.

I also saw several reports on Twitter that a number of the enrollees are children of “illegals”, so maybe the parents had to show a green card before being helped.

I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt unless there’s evidence to the contrary. Twitter is a stupid place.

The living get to write history

We have entered a familiar period after shooting massacres during which officials justify what police did and why. We are hearing Thin Blue Line advocates saying it was reasonable to hang back. After all, the scene was dangerous. The suspect had a semiautomatic rifle.

This familiar pattern, by which police authorities presume the public is on their side, and won’t question them too much, is fraying as more details emerge as to what the police didn’t do and why they didn’t do it.

On the video, you can hear rapid-fire gunshots followed by mothers wailing in despair, pleading with armed police to save their kids.

The good guys with the guns were not that good. Indeed, they were deadly. It was the teachers, who were not armed, who did the most to save their students. The real heroes are dead. The cowards are alive.

But the living get to write history.

Seems like some cops think that they are heroes just by virtue of wearing a badge. But if they can’t handle serving and protecting, they should find another line of work. Like what I do.
