Suzanne Moore on JKR v Humza Yousaf:
Humza Yousaf had been warned that this legislation was unworkable by numerous women’s groups. Men who identified as women were protected but women weren’t. How on earth were the police going to deal with this?
Who would blink first? Rowling or the police? When what she said was not deemed a hate crime, everything began to fall apart. “Oh, it’s OK for her with her wealth” some said and there she was again, asserting that if any other woman was arrested, she would repeat those words and be arrested alongside them.
Here was a lesson in solidarity, in sisterhood and the simple but incendiary power of saying no.
Much of this fight has been about just that. Women saying no and women having boundaries and that is why the liberal left has been so fundamentally useless with their blurry “be kind” mantras, which mean be kind only to men. Or anyone who claims a minority identity.
Or when you get right down to it anyone except women.
Right on.!

Rowling has in the past very clearly said that gender is determined at birth, or even at conception by the trillions of cells and the XX or XY chromosomes they contain. A man is a man and a woman is a woman and there’s no ghost in the machine which is of the opposite gender or even claims to belong to a different species.
The machine is the ghost.

I admired Dhondy for his biography of C. L. R. James; interesting to see him side with Rowling.
She’s a hero, and very popular. Those who oppose her are a tiny minority, but because they tend to congregate, and are extremely aggressive and vociferous, they seem to believe (or, want us to believe) that they are more numerous than they actually are.
They are, somehow, simultaneously:
Trans AND non-binary AND really, truly the sex they claim to be;
A tiny, most oppressed minority AND have the support of all of society except for a handful of TERFs on the wrong side of history;
Victims of widespread attempted genocide AND so ignored that they need several weeks’ worth of visibility days every year;
Already in all our spaces, and have been there undetected for years, AND the victims of cruel women excluding them all the time;
And all the powers of the police and government have been gathered in order oppress them with cruel ‘anti-trans’ legislation, AND women are being bullies and should be arrested for breaking all the new laws against upsetting ‘trans’ people.
Sigh.
