The s word
The BBC stalwart as ever.
If you Google the question you get a long string of titles about explaining why women rarely (read: never) commit mass shootings. But hey, that’s no reason not to lie about it!
Tom Bateman and Max Matza reported yesterday:
The attacker, who died at the scene of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, left a note, officials said, but they added that a definitive motive may never be known. “I won’t dignify the attacker’s words by repeating them, they are horrific and vile,” said Mr Thompson.
Westman’s name was legally changed from Robert to Robin in 2020, with the judge writing: “Minor child identifies as a female”. However, some federal officials and police have referred to Westman as a man when discussing the attack.
Chief O’Hara told reporters that news outlets should stop using the killer’s name, because “the purpose of the shooter’s actions was to obtain notoriety”.
He added that she, “like so many other mass shooters that we have seen in this country too often and around the world, had some deranged fascination with previous mass shootings”.
Subtle stuff. Some federal officials and police have referred to Westman as a man, but you’ll never catch the loyal BBC doing that! Oh hell no! A judge in 2020 said the guy “identifies as female” so female he is, by golly, and the BBC will do all it can to distort the news coverage and the statistics. Yes women do too so commit mass murders!! It’s sexist to say they don’t!

Interesting that that “she” is outside the quotation marks. That could mean that the BBC is outright lying – that the chief did not say “she” but the BBC did.
In their news conference, officials confirmed that the attacker had previously attended the school. Her mother, Mary Grace Westman, previously worked at the school, and has so far not responded to law enforcement’s attempts to contact her.
…
Officials added that the guns used in the attack were all legally purchased, that the killer did not appear on any government watchlist, and that police are not aware of any mental health diagnoses or treatments that she was receiving.
Don’t you dare call that mass murderer “he”.

IIRC it was David Brin who suggested that someone who commits a crime for the notoriety should thereafter be referred to as something like doofus235.
To be scrupulously fair, I can think of three female mass shooters off the top of my head: two People of Gender, and the “I don’t like Mondays” girl. Which just proves your point – two who identified as “boys” and one from over 40 years ago.
Unfortunately journalism has adopted a standard that requires them to use a subject’s preferred pronouns in their reporting. About all that can be hoped for in this tragic case is to note the name change.
He also had written that he regretted identifying as trans and said that social media had influenced him. Why they don’t use that and just call him a male is beyond me. You’d think they would love the chance to point out how unstable detransers are.
Pretty sure that’s just what they did. Yesterday the Daily Mail quoted O’Hara thusly: “The coward who fired these shots ultimately took his own life in the rear of the church’.”
