Christian nationalist pastor Doug Wilson, who has argued that wives should submit to their husbands, women should be denied the vote, and Christian enslavers were on “firm scriptural ground,” led a worship service at the Pentagon this week at the invitation of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
Women should be stomped into submission, while men should be free to do all the things Donald Trump has done, because that’s the Christian rule. Just ask the bible if you don’t believe me.
Critics have questioned Hegseth’s elevation of Christianity within the Defense Department. The secretary instituted monthly prayer meetings at the Pentagon last May.
Fred Wellman, a West Point graduate and 20-year Army veteran running for Congress from Missouri, called Wilson’s appearance this week an “unconstitutional and extreme attack” on the First Amendment.
“Hegseth is using his official position to make his religion the official one of the Department of Defense using official facilities, communications channels and personnel,” he wrote on X. “This must end and must be investigated.”
But, of course, it won’t end and it won’t be investigated.
Christ said at Matthew 5:28 (KJV): “But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.” This would be worth consideration on the part of the Christian nationalist pastor Doug Wilson. Either Christ was speaking from experience, which on his own terms would qualify him as a sinner, OR he was speaking totally off the top of his head about something he had never had any practical experience of himself, which would qualify him as a complete fool.
As my theological knowledge is very limited, I would be interested in Doug Wilson’s view on this serious problem..
He’s right of course, that wifely submission and slavery rest on solid scriptural grounds. The problem with that is why should I give a damn? They are not my scriptures, the god depicted is not my god, and I live my life in a secular manner. Our society decided, not all that long ago, that slavery was wrong and bad. Those Christians who believe that cannot see the scriptural support for slavery. We have two schools of thought talking past each other and making no sense to the other side. Too bad neither side wants to listen to non-believers, who often know the Bible at least as well as they do.
As for submission. My husband does not wish me to submit; he wants me to remain an independent, even sassy, woman as I am. So, if I were to submit, it would be against his wishes, and therefore, wouldn’t submission be an act of rebellion?
