I think you should rephrase that, Donald. How about:
“This is where people are afraid to open up and face what’s going on.” Or
“This is where people are afraid to open up and believe what’s going on.” Or
“This is where people are afraid to open up and say, face and believe what’s going on”.?
Because
“This is where people are afraid to open up and say what’s going on….” puts the responsibility on them. Which is not where it lies.
