These are supposed to blind us to the “maleness” they are so desperate to hide from us. A subhead from the linked story:

They’re not banned from playing; they’re just not allowed to misrepresent themselves in order to intrude upon a part of the organization they are not qualified to participate in. This is no different than division by age. Being male disqualifies them from playing on women’s teams. It’s not hatred,. It’s not betrayal. It’s not a plot. I’m sure these players are all welcome to try out for male teams. If they don’t make the cut for competitive teams, that’s the risk anyone trying out faces.
