Trump is shouting at a football team to change its name back to the racist one they dropped. What a worthy cause!
Trump threatened on Sunday to interfere with a deal to build a new football stadium in Washington, D.C., unless the local NFL team, now known as the Commanders, changes its name back to Redskins.
Yeah fer sher, what right do they have to stop calling themselves “redskins” just because it’s a crude trashy insult?
The American football team dropped the name Redskins in 2020 after decades of criticism that it was a racial slur with links to the U.S. genocide of the Indigenous population.
But Mommmmmmm, Trump grew up watching movies about cowboys and redskins and he loves that old racist vibe.
Trump had called for a return to the name Redskins – and for the Cleveland Guardians baseball team to once again adopt the name Indians – on other occasions, but on Sunday he added that he may take official action.
“I may put a restriction on them that if they don’t change the name back to the original ‘Washington Redskins,’ and get rid of the ridiculous moniker, ‘Washington Commanders,’ I won’t make a deal for them to build a Stadium in Washington,” Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform.
What’s ridiculous about Commanders? Apart from the fact that “Commander” is one of Trump’s titles of course.
Anyway it’s none of his business and he should go take a long walk on a short pier.
As aggravating as this is, I’m putting it into the “Trump is deliberately trying to be controversial to keep people from talking about other shit he’s doing” category.
Maybe, Freemage, but I think that might be giving him credit for too much thought. I think he just does shit. Whatever happens to catch his notice at the time.

Yet another idiotic, trivial demand that would be well outside the purview of the presidency for anyone else. Restore problematic sports team names; change the formula for Coke; rename the Gulf of Mexico; threaten TV hosts. He thinks he can demand anything at all, of anyone.
This looks to me like President Pedochet’s latest attempt to change the channel from MAGA’s meltdown over the Epstein files. Good luck with that!
Why would he be doing that in the first place? Is that the president’s job? His whole outburst is ridiculous.

The old stadium (long since abandoned, but still crumbling) was built on federal land. The feds leased the land to DC earlier this year with the intention of building a new stadium, so I guess technically they’re the landlord and could still weigh in.
The best outcome would be for the team to keep its new name, and the stadium not to get built. Sports stadiums aren’t a great deal in general, and football stadiums are especially bad–generally used only about a dozen times a year, not terribly adaptable for other uses, and, since football fans for the most part don’t use public transport, surrounded by acres of impermeable parking lots. The old stadium was an eyesore as soon as it was built (anchoring the east end of an axis that encompasses the Capitol, the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial, Memorial Bridge, and Arlington Cemetery). The site would be ideal as a mixed-use neighborhood; let the football team stay in the Maryland suburbs.
Also, not really a pertinent fact, but the old stadium was named after Bad Kennedy’s dad.

Why stop blowing the dog whistle there? The Orioles could be renamed the Jim Crows. Miami Dolphins could be renamed the Miami Wetbacks… And surely there’s a WNBA team out there that could be renamed the Squaws. That ought to be enough to make MAGA nation forget Epstein.
