Trump: "So I put on a 30% tariff, which is very low. I got an emergency call from I believe the prime minister of Switzerland. She was very aggressive … I didn't really like the way she talked to us, so instead of giving her a reduction, I raised it to 39%." pic.twitter.com/covIESz4u2
Who knew that tariffs are for punishing people who aren’t deferential enough to Trump?
It’s “L’État, c’est moi” with a pouty toddler’s vengeance.
He’s not doing this for America, but for himself. He wants everyone to bow down and worship him, to kiss his ring, beg forgiveness and curry favour, just like any mob boss, and he’s taking America along for the ride. Trump has turned American foreign and economic policy into a fickle, uncalibrated weapon he uses for ego gratification, in order to settle personal scores and petty grievances. He probably thinks his unpredictability is a clever way to keep everyone on their toes, when instead, it’s the highway to American irrelevance. He thinks he’s got more clout than he actually does, and what power he does have is erratic and disipated, withTrump as likely to issue threats and deadlines that are as empty and meaningless as his pledges and promises. He is as unreliable an enforcer as he is an ally, the worst of both worlds.
How long before his handlers (whether in Washington, or Moscow) decide enough is enough? Or will he take a step too far before they can real him and his rhetoric back (knowing that that “a step too far” is quite different between his domestic puppet-masters and Putin, each having their own standards of what might constitute an acceptable level of chaos, neither of which will be good for the United States as a functioning entity)?
