Safe as houses

The Beeb also reports on the “trans murderer” we read about yesterday.

Trans prisoner charged with sexual assault in women’s jail

Not a trans prisoner, a real prisoner. A male real prisoner, in a women’s prison. BBC always so careful to hide the truth as long as it can. A very dishonest way to report news.

A transgender prisoner serving a sentence for murder has been charged with the sexual assault of a fellow inmate at a women’s prison.

Alexandra Stewart, previously known as Alan Baker, allegedly attacked the woman at HMP Greenock.

Now why was he previously known as Alan do you suppose? Just a freak accident? Someone’s hand shook on the birth certificate?

Stewart – a biological male who identifies as a woman – was jailed for the murder of John Weir in 2013 and has been held in a women’s unit in the prison since 2016.

Oh there it is. Finally. In the third paragraph. Better late than never?

Stewart – thought to be one of two trans women in the female prison estate – was jailed for life after murdering Weir, 36, by stabbing him 16 times at his home in Bonhill, West Dunbartonshire.

But that’s no reason to refer to him as a man, now is it.

Also no reason to believe that he might be a threat of any kind to female prisoners, given that the threshold for that is probably stabbing someone at least two dozen times, minimum. I mean, they must be counting for some reason. If he doesn’t tick any of the wrong boxes, then he’s good to go. There must be boxes, right? They must have actual standards by which they assess all of those “acceptable risks,” right? Some kind of check-list, or guidelines, or rules? Someone is applying these standards, and someone had to come up with them, too. There must have been committees struck, studies undertaken, minutes recorded, votes cast. And all of this is probably written down somewhere? Maybe even garnished with a sprinkling of signatures? If the Scottish Government has so much confidence and trust in the thoroughness, wisdom, and justness of their proceedings, the carefully crafted standards that emerged from them, and those standards’ conformity to its fundamental, ongoing duty of care to female prisoners, then then those who took part in this process should be more than willing to stand up, proclaim their participation, and defend the the regulations they helped create. If the assault victim does decide to sue*, then they might very well get the chance to do exctly that. In court.

Given the many steps that must have been involved in the decision-making process leading to men being admitted to the female estate, there should be a good number people taking pride in a job well done, from Nicola Sturgeon on down. Right? Don’t be shy! Credit where credit is due, I say. Stand up and take a bow.

*Though I can certainly understand if she decides not to go through with what would undoubtedly be a painful ordeal. With Rowling’s support, she’ll get the best possible legal team. Discovery will be…interesting. Of course ScotGov might just chicken out, cut their losses, and settle out of court.
