Two whole entire hours???

Another rape crisis centre, another insult to women.

In July 2025 I resolved a 4 year legal case against the Brighton rape crisis centre Survivors’ Network for their failure to provide women with a single-sex peer support group. You can read the background to the case here.

You can read our joint statement following the resolution here.

On 27 March of this year, almost eight months after publication of the Joint Statement, Katy Bourne OBE, of The Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner announced there would be:

“A women-only* support group for survivors of sexual violence – provided by Survivors Network – available from April 26”, “women only” meaning “those assigned female at birth, who still identify as a woman”.

Survivors’ Network states on its website that the group (the Maple Group):

  1. Is part of a pilot commissioned by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Sussex, initially running for a year;
  2. Will take place on Mondays, 14:00 – 16:00 at an accessible venue in the centre of Brighton; and
  3. Is for biological women survivors who still identify as women.

It’s that Monty Python skit about the important document available to everyone that’s in a locked box in a closet in a basement in Outer Mongolia – not the exact wording but you get the drift of the joke, and here it is in real life, not a joke but an astounding insult. Ok, bitches, you get your god damn “women only” service, for two hours a week. Can’t make it at that time? Tough shit.

It’s just astounding.

It’s from Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and it’s brilliant.

“Oh yes, well as soon as I heard I went straight round to see them, yesterday afternoon. You hadn’t exactly gone out of your way to call attention to them, had you? I mean like actually telling anybody or anything.”

“But the plans were on display…”

“On display? I eventually had to go down to the cellar to find them.”

    “That’s the display department.”

    “With a torch.”

“Ah, well, the lights had probably gone.”

    “So had the stairs.”

“But look, you found the notice, didn’t you?”

“Yes,” said Arthur, “yes I did. It was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying ‘Beware of the Leopard.”

And then later the aliens arrive to blow up the Earth…

“There’s no point in acting all surprised about it. All the planning charts and demolition orders have been on display in your local planning department on Alpha Centauri for fifty of your Earth years, so you’ve had plenty of time to lodge any formal complaint and it’s far too late to start making a fuss about it now.”

    …

“What do you mean you’ve never been to Alpha Centauri? For heaven’s sake mankind, it’s only four light years away you know. I’m sorry, but if you can’t be bothered to take an interest in local affairs that’s your own lookout.

    “Energize the demolition beams.”

Light poured out into the hatchways.

“I don’t know,” said the voice on the PA, “apathetic bloody planet, I’ve no sympathy at all.”

Also, note that the only timeslot is during office hours. So it’s not useful for most women with jobs, is it?
