Dragged Away Kicking and Screaming

Enough of all this pallid nerdy arguing and wondering and marching back and forth. I have been persuaded. much against my better judgment, that what I really want is a very long walk on a mountain trail. I don’t think it is, I think I’ll cry and whine and ask to be carried and say my foot hurts and ask for ice cream and say my face is cold and ask for a cookie and say why aren’t we there yet and ask for brandy and say I want to go home right now. But I have acquiesced, despite the insufficiently theorized nature of this proposed very long walk and the absence of coffee houses and bookshops on this much-advertised trail thingy. I have acquiesced, I have bowed, I have given in, I have said oh all right. I’m told we will see eagles and lions and orcas and lyre birds and stoats and wildebeest, and I must say I do like the sound of that. Not as much as cookies and brandy and coffee, but enough.

Good for you! I hope you have a great time.

I find that very difficult to argue with, Juan. I think you’ve really nailed it this time.

Stewart, I accuse you of first degree irony. There is no evidence of you ever having found any difficulty at all in arguing about anything.

Funny, I’ve never thought of myself as argumentative…

OK, what can we do while she’s not here?

Let’s have a conversation about her in which we all call her ‘Olivia’, and discuss what a good idea it is to put people in prison for calling police-horses gay… ;-)

I think there’s only a point in discussing things that aren’t quite as obvious as what you suggest. We could bone up on orcas and wildebeest and prepare to grill her mercilessly about them in case she wasn’t paying sufficient attention.

In years to come she’ll be able trot out this thread as a triumphant answer to the question “What would B&W have been without OB?”

Hey, it was a walk, not a three day camping trip. What do you mean ‘while she’s not here’? I’m always not here at that time of day, on account of how that time of day is 2:30 a.m. where I am – but I certainly wasn’t still stuck out in the great horrible outdoors at that time. What a thought.

Grilled orca and wildebeest for lunch? Sounds good to me.

Well, gosh darn, the *fuss* you made about it, sounded like a 3-day expedition…

Hope you feel better now? And I mean that most sincerely…

Well of course it did, but that’s the point of making a fuss, isn’t it. At least that’s always been my view. If you’re going to whine, whine, don’t just stand around bashfully murmuring. Pitch a fit. Sulk. Fling yourself down on the floor and drum with your heels if you have to. It’s no good making a fuss if you’re going to do it in a grownup manner. Scream, complain, yell, exaggerate, make demands; make sure you are the center of attention, and then go with that. Everything else is mere dilettantism.

I feel much better now that I’m back. That’s the point of a long walk, I guess: how elated you feel when it’s over.

    OT, but I’ve just been over at Ben Goldacre’s site where he is cruelly vivisecting Brain Gym, one of my betes noir. ( Is that right?) Unless I missed it, you don’t seem to link to it. If you are unfamiliar with it, I urge you to visit;

Don, I think it’s “betes noires.”

OB, did you happen to see what I sent you off-list a couple of days ago? I sent it to the address on the “Contact Us” page.

I did, Stewart, and I have it on scribbled list under ‘ANSWER’ that sits right next to keyboard (on top of a pile of about twenty such To Do lists). Sorry for slowness. And here I am complaining about slow or altogether stopped email correspondents. Tsk. Tsk tsk.

Thanks. No rush in the reply, just wanted to be sure that wherever it landed was the right place.
