Maajid Nawaz tells Muslim women to remove their hijab. Slobbering, white, fascist atheists still think he’s a Muslim.
Why is CJ Werleman policing who is a Muslim? Why is he implying that Maajid Nawaz is not a Muslim, thus aligning himself with Islamists who try to incite violence against Maajid? Why is Werleman helping Islamists bully Maajid for being a reformist? Why is he doing it in such an ugly, abusive, vituperative way? What’s the matter with him?
(Also what’s this “white” bullshit? Does Werleman think he’s not white? Why do people do that?)

Because…in a large section of the LEFT wing info-bubble, next to the anti-vaxxers, and the GMO paranoids, is a body of Twue Bewievers who’ve been lulled into permanent stupor by anti-Semitic and anti-American tropes left over from the Cold War.
Their minds are as frozen as those of gun-nuts, MRAs, tax resisters, neo-Confederates etc. etc.
Ugh. Werleman is really the absolute worst. Even given the nasty standards of what I call “G/G/G” politics (Greenwald/Guardian/Galloway), he keeps managing to appall.
Which makes sense, because prior to his faitheist/Islamophile conversion and subsequent anti-New Atheist jihad, he was probably the nastiest atheist writer around (and, thankfully, one of the least visible). Have you seen the collection of his racist, Islamophobic tweets from those days?

Those little bons mots are way further out than anything Sam Harris (Werleman’s most hated “Islamophobe”) has ever written, no? Werleman acts like he has grown and changed since then, but it wasn’t that long ago and he has really just switched targets. He is now equally vicious toward New Atheists (whom he describes as more dangerous to the US than the Christian Right) , liberal Muslims and ex-Muslims.
He has grown of fond of stating that one should follow the money to learn why ex-Muslims and reformist Muslims write what they write, suggesting that they are just paid propagandists. This is ironic, as Werleman’s only paid outlet now (following a plagiarism scandal) is Middle East Eye, generally described by other sources as a Muslim Brotherhood front; he starts writing for them, and suddenly he is the internet’s most fervent crusader against Western imperialism and Islamophobia. Gone are the days of comparing Muslim women’s tampon strings to bomb fuses! As with the racism/Islamophobia thing, whatever he attacks his opponents for seems to be more true of Werleman himself.
And now I’ve deleted a long paragraph imagining Werleman in middle school. He really sets me off.

I’ve seen a bit about Werleman out of the corner of my eye but haven’t really paid attention until now. He’s really extraordinary.

Yup, follow the money. Pretty much a troll-for-hire.
Yeah. As I’ve said before, I unfollowed Werleman on Twitter around ’09-’10 on account of his hostility towards Muslims/Middle-Easterners. His convenient about face didn’t surprise me though – he never seemed driven by issues or analysis (something his plagiarism bares out).
Knew that he wouldn’t amount to much good. Doesn’t feel nice to be proven right, though.
On another point, maybe he needs a byline. “CJ Werleman: Much More of A Muslim Than Maajid Nawaz (Such As To Be Able To Excommunicate Him).”

Werleman is a total piece of shit who loves to attack liberal Muslims like Nawaz as “native informants” and “not true Muslims”. It’s amazing cheek as well repugnant.
