Failure to list

CNN reports:

Attorney General Jeff Sessions did not disclose meetings he had last year with Russian officials when he applied for his security clearance, the Justice Department told CNN Wednesday.

Well. It’s hard to see how he can explain that away. “Oh, I didn’t realize I was supposed to.” “Sir, you’re the nation’s top law enforcement official. It’s your job to know.” “Oh it was just a little slip.” “Sir, this is Russia we’re talking about. Vladimir Putin’s Russia.”

Sessions, who met with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak at least two times last year, didn’t note those interactions on the form, which requires him to list “any contact” he or his family had with a “foreign government” or its “representatives” over the past seven years, officials said.

Ok but when it says “any contact” it surely doesn’t mean something as trivial as meeting with the Russian ambassador…

But to be fair, he wasn’t actually the nations top law enforcement official when he was asked the question.

No, Acolyte, but he was interviewing for the job, and should be expected to have a basic understanding of the laws that he would be upholding.

He wasn’t? Wasn’t that why he was applying for a security clearance?

Oops, I should have been clearer there. I wasn’t making excuses for him, just joking on a possible loophole he might exploit as an excuse for his ignorance.

My apologies for my sloppy writing.

CNN doesn’t make the timing crystal clear, but it looks as if he filled out the security paperwork after Trump chose him for AG but before he was sworn in.

Two dates are specified in this passage:

At his confirmation hearing January 10, Sessions testified that he “did not have communications” with the Russians during the campaign. He made the same assertion in an official questionnaire.

He was sworn in as attorney general February 9 and subsequently received a security clearance, even though he didn’t mention the Kislyak meetings on his paperwork.

Maybe he filled out the paperwork after he was sworn in – it’s not clear.

Acolyte – oh no problem. I was curious. It’s a bit sloppy of CNN not to nail down the chronology, if you ask me.
