First you have to know that Jo Grady is the General Secretary of the University and College Union aka UCU.

So this is the General Secretary of the UCU cheering on Lola Olufemi’s success at getting Oxford feminist historian Selina Todd barred from giving her scheduled talk at a feminist history event.

It’s enough to make you lose your lunch.

    This is “hot?”

Or is that a vote for burning the witch?

    Combustible?

This is “fire,” as in lit, off the chain, hella dope, scrumtrulescent…

I remember when ‘dope’ used to mean idiot.

Of course, dope could also mean drugs, or it could mean information. Multitalented word (or is it intersectional?)

Why is this a printed statement from Lola Olufemi “read by” Laura Schwartz?

So…did Lola Olufemi write out the statement, then Laura Schwartz read it out out loud, and then someone else transcribed that (complete with the note that “public instructions” probably meant “public institutions”), then that person, or perhaps someone else, turned the printed text into a bitmap and tweeted it out?

Or is this the original statement but someone just thought we should know Laura Schwartz has read it? Maybe we’re all supposed to add our names after we’ve read it?

Some interesting etymology, but I notice the current usage isn’t there yet. >>

One of the seven dwarves also, depicted as an idiot more or less. When I hear young people use the word I cringe a little. ;)

My memory may be off but isn’t Shon Faye the TIM who wrote about his time in some Catholic males only housing in Washington, D.C.? Some housing that was male only but that had Catholic women volunteers come by every day to scrub and clean and take care of the place? Funny how Shonny Boy did not identify as a woman then………just saying.

Hm… “doping” is also used for the deliberate introduction of impurities into a substance to reduce its conductivity in semiconductor manufacture.

There’s definitely a joke in there, but I don’t have the energy to tease it out.

Well it would be more accurate to say doping “alters” the conductivity as it both decreases and increases it, and other weird shit along the way. At least it did 35 years ago when I was an EE major :^)

Lance “everyone else was doing it” Armstrong knows doping. He’s very dope, or dopey, depending on who you ask.

Looks like @drjogrady has detweeted her emoji, maybe it was too controversial. It could have meant ‘burn it’ after all. Vanished like it was never there.

southwest88 – your recollection is mostly correct, although it was an Opus Dei institution in London

When I say no women were permitted to come in the house that’s not strictly accurate. Opus Dei has a third type of member—the numerary assistants. All women, they are also celibate and devote themselves specifically to the physical care (i.e. the cleaning) of Opus Dei centers and houses like Netherhall. At 9 AM every morning, the small, cell-like room I had would be opened by Peter—a signal that it was time to leave my room for no less than two hours. The ground floor door to the stairs was locked until 11 AM to prevent us having any contact with the invisible women who would clean and tidy our rooms every day. One morning, I was accidentally locked upstairs with them. The numerary assistant who saw me dropped her eyes and seemed very anxious. Saying nothing, I bolted down the corridor towards a fire exit balcony

Do it to Selina! I don’t care what you do to her, but do it to her! Burn her! Do it to Selina, not to me!
