I was a little perturbed by the gold insignia in the upper left. Turns out is HAS had ‘nationalist’ meanings, but it is a standard feature in naval flags and the presidential flag.

JtD, that’s the Trident. It harks back to Royal State of Volodymyr the Great, and was proposed as Ukraines national symbol in 1917. I looked this up a few months back. If I recall it was originally meant to represent the holy trinity, not an actual trident.

Putin should be very worried at this: this is exactly the kind of nationalistic spirit that drove the Baltic peoples to foster a multi-generational hatred of all things Soviet or Russian. Underfed, underprepared Russian soldiers forced into military service in a foreign country cannot prevail against this.
