Many happy returns

Ah the ol’ tax returns – you know, the ones he couldn’t release because he was being audited, even though being audited doesn’t in any way prevent the release of tax returns.

Former President Trump on Monday filed an emergency application asking the Supreme Court to temporarily block a House committee from obtaining his tax returns.

The ones he could have released back in 2015 if he hadn’t been such a crook. It’s not required, but presidential candidates have been doing it for years, and he was the first to refuse in all those years. Why would he do that? Same reason he’d take the 5th, probably, but in this case we get to draw conclusions from the refusal. My conclusion: he’s dirty.

His request comes after a federal appeals court last week declined the former president’s request to block the release of his tax returns, CNN reports.

They must be Communists and Antifa and filthy immigrants on that court, right? No decent American patriot would decline a request from Trump.

CNN has more:

The House Ways and Means Committee is set to receive former President Donald Trump’s IRS tax returns in one week after a federal appeals court on Thursday declined Trump’s request to hold up the release.

The Supreme Court could still intervene if Trump appeals.

A three-judge panel on the DC Circuit Court of Appeals decided they won’t put the handover of the former president’s tax returns on hold after the full appeals court rejected Trump’s request that they review an earlier decision allowing for the release of the returns.

The god-emperor doesn’t win every time.

Let us not forget that he said that he WOULD release them, when asked about it during his campaign. He brushed the question aside with a sort of “of course I willl, why are you even asking” sort of affirmative.

That’s what I remember, too, James.

Did he? Wasn’t it always contingent on the completion of the “audit” which of course was never completed?

He started using the audit excuse after his election.

    Politico in February 2016:

But on Thursday night’s debate stage, he provided the most explicit reason yet: He’s being audited.

“As far as my return, I want to file it, except for many years, I’ve been audited every year,” he said. “Twelve years or something like that. Every year they audit me, audit me, audit me. I have friends that are very wealthy people” who never get audited.

That was the Republican debates, the primary debates. He said it lots more times in the prez debates.

I remember him initially saying that he’d release the returns without condition. I found this on Politifact:

“Will you release any of your tax returns for the public to scrutinize?” NBC’s Chuck Todd asked Trump in January 2016.

“Well, we’re working on that now. I have very big returns, as you know, and I have everything all approved and very beautiful and we’ll be working that over in the next period of time, Chuck. Absolutely,” Trump replied.

A few weeks later, Trump told the Today Show in February 2016 that he’ll release his tax returns “probably over the next few months.”

Since those comments, Trump has repeated the promise but with conditions.

And here comes Roberts, batting cleanup.

Stay on the release until after the election, I mean, until all the issues can be considered.
