Ah yes, from the Greek ἑρστορία. But why not go all out and write “hystery”, referencing the womb, ὑστέρα?

Wait a minute! That’s not a woman! That’s a man! There’s been some mistake here.

Not “WHAT A WOMAN!” but “WHAT WOMAN?”

Got the head tilt and half-lidded come hither look down pat though.

    Colossal insult to women.

Rather bold of them to cite Hermione Granger as an example…

Once again, proof of the importance of correct punctuation. It was no doubt meant to read: What, a woman!?

Der Durchwanderer, that has gone through my head many times in reference to this relentless dogmatism of the TAs. I wonder why the Beatles haven’t been declared non gratis? After all, it does go on to say “but she was another man”. (By the way, for those who think this matters, they also are rich, much like Rowling is rich.)

I guess….because they never tweeted it…or maybe…it’s because they won’t take on a (male) legend.

iknklast, I would guess it’s mainly down to The Beatles being practically prehistoric from the perspective of most TRAs. They are just not on their radar (and like you said, not on Twitter). My nephew is 15 and just got into music 5 minutes ago, and has never heard of the Rolling Stones. Well, he hadn’t, not until his grandfather started haranguing him about them (and it’s not like he’s a huge fan, so I have no idea why that developed into a Big Thing)

Catwhisperer, maybe, but one thing I do know. Most of my students are familiar with the Beatles. They can often do a better job identifying them than characters from Harry Potter movies. So…maybe it’s the sacred status of the Beatles? Or just not actually listening to the words of the songs? Or…four males? Some combination?

Well that’s… I don’t know, encouraging I guess. It seems so easy these days for people to live in bubbles of their own interests and never see what’s outside of them. That’s how these kids come to think that knowing the difference between men and women is some kind of fringe belief, after all.
