Because it is metaphysical nonsense

Now there’s a fine impartial headline from the CBC:

Nurse tells B.C. hearing she’s not transphobic, but calls gender identity ‘metaphysical nonsense’

There’s no “but” needed in that headline. There’s no contradiction. “Transphobic” means “mean and horrible to people who claim to be trans.” It’s neither phobic nor mean & horrible to know that “gender identity” is metaphysical nonsense. It would be metaphysical nonsense to say that people can be rabbits by thinking they are rabbits, and the same applies to all the other nouns that name something one can’t turn into via the power of thought. People can become teachers, pilots, parents, friends, colleagues, reporters, nurses, and the like. People can’t become trees or planets or watermelons. It’s not phobic to grasp this overarching distinction.

Man, that’s disappointing. I was planning to become Saturn next week. You just spoiled my weekend.

But that point is what is fundamentally at issue in this proceeding. There is no allegation of mistreatment of any patient, trans or otherwise. The conduct in question is holding and expressing the view that a man is not a woman because he says so. The effort is to define that as transphobic on the face of it. The only gray area in the proceeding is whether or not the ‘while identifying herself as a nurse’ does enough work to make expressing her views professional conduct.

If you want to become Saturn you better put a ring on it.

I’m happy to see that she has finally had her hearing because this issue has been dragging on for, what 2, 3 years?

doesn’t “phobic” really mean “fear of”? Which can lead to being mean and all that, but.

I always say I am not transphobic…just trans skeptical.

I say I don’t have an irrational fear and hatred of Catholics, but I call the transubstantiation “metaphysical nonsense.”

If some Catholics insisted they’re the same thing and came after my job for this, I think I’d develop a rather reasonable fear and hatred of those particular Catholics.

iknklast et al., I hate to burst your balloons, but I’ve been Saturn since October 12, 1984.

I’m actually two planets; I’m sometimes asked “Why are you Saturn on Uranus all day?”

Honestly James, as if *you* identifying as Saturn would prevent anyone (or anything) else from being Saturn? How narrow minded of you! We can all be Saturn. Let’s all be Saturn! End the division between Saturn and UnSaturn!
