The Supreme Court seems poised to reject attempts to kick former President Donald Trump off the 2024 ballot.
A definitive ruling for Trump, the leading Republican candidate for president, would largely end efforts in Colorado, Maine and elsewhere to prevent his name from appearing on the ballot.
Conservative and liberal justices alike questioned during arguments Thursday whether Trump can be disqualified from being president again because of his efforts to undo his loss in the 2020 election to Democrat Joe Biden, ending with the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.
His “efforts to undo his loss” included several crimes, but we have to let him go ahead and destroy everything.
The Supremes aren’t even apparently thinking about the essential central issue, judging by their lines of questioning. The central issue being, of course, did Trump support insurrection. They are asking things like “is a former president subject to conviction?” Of course he should be. Any child in a Civics class knows that there is no special category of citizen that is immune to prosecution. They are also apparently obsessed with whether individual states like Colorado can interpret federal laws in their own territory, which is a fair enough thing to talk about, but not at the expense of avoiding the main issue, imo.
The good news is that the first problem mean we won’t have to worry about the last two for very long…
