Largely inexperienced

And here we go: Even Worse Than Last Time in action. The Beast appoints a Fox News jock Secretary of Defense.

President-elect Donald Trump stunned the Pentagon and the broader defense world by nominating Fox News host Pete Hegseth to serve as his defense secretary, tapping someone largely inexperienced and untested on the global stage to take over the world’s largest and most powerful military.

The news was met with bewilderment and worry among many in Washington as Trump passed on a number of established national security heavy-hitters and chose an Army National Guard captain well known in conservative circles as a co-host of Fox News Channel’s “Fox & Friends Weekend.”

Of course he did. He considers himself qualified to be president, so why wouldn’t another tv personality be qualified to take over the world’s largest and most powerful military?

Hegseth’s choice could bring sweeping changes to the military. He has made it clear on his show and in interviews that, like Trump, he is opposed to “woke” programs that promote equity and inclusion. He also has questioned the role of women in combat and advocated pardoning service members charged with war crimes.

Because war crimes are a good thing and we’re proud of them.

So now we’re living in an episode of Hogan’s Heroes. Two bumbling fools in charge of things.

And of course he’s opposed to women in combat; women are supposed to be making him sandwiches. I’m somewhat opposed to women in combat, too, but only to the extent I’m opposed to men in combat. Perhaps with a little less combat and a little more diplomacy we could make a better world. Except I’m too much of a cynic to believe that.

There is concern in the top ranks of the US military that Hegseth could help Trump pursue retribution against generals and other senior officers who were seen to be insufficiently loyal to the president-elect in the past.

A dictator relies on his military leaders, so first is the purge of those who he fears may resist him and the installment of those loyal to the leader. Then comes retribution against those who have shown disloyalty in the past, even if they’re already retired from service and no longer in a position to thwart the leader’s orders.

Mark Milley, a retired general who was chair of the joint chiefs of staff in Trump’s first term and who resisted Trump’s calls to use troops against protesters, reportedly fears being recalled to service by Trump so he can be court-martialed.

Exactly the spiteful behaviour that Trump is known for. Recall a retired general, court marshall him and send him on his way with a dishonourable discharge, stripped of his pension, benefits and reputation.

A relative of mine has told me he was surprised Trump didn’t choose Hulk Hogan or Yosemite Sam. I think it would have been funnier had these choices actually been more ludicrous than Hegseth; sad as it might be, they’re all more or less tied. I can only hope that the government employees under the new secretary of defense will manage to temper him a bit.
