With all due respect to the author, Nilofar Ayoubi, ‘intervention’ has been tried in Afghanistan, and found wanting. The US and it allies were bogged down there for 13 years, and finally withdrew empty-handed. All attempts to build democracy there had to be put on indefinite hold.
Islamism is stronger there than Nazism was in Germany in the 1930s.. The situation improved for women there before the Taliban’s resurgence and eventual victory.
On the face of it, it will be the last place on Earth where liberal democracy will win out.
Omar, I don’t recall the invasion of Afghanistan to be anything other than Bush’s attempt to punish anyone and everyone for 9/11, it was never about democracy,liberation or any of the other lies America tells when it wants war.
It took America 13 years, thousands of lives, and billions of dollars to replace the Taliban with the Taliban.
How different Afghanistan and the world would be had America pulled it’s head in and supported Russia’s attempt to halt Islamist expansion.
But as usual, America doesn’t want to fol.ow a good lead, it wants to stamp its authoritarianism everywhere. And then people wonder why a Trump can rise so high
You cannot bomb a country into democracy, but bombs are a good way to lose friends create powerful enemies.
