   Of course we can take care of those things. We are the richest country in the world, and other countries manage (even while fighting wars in some cases). We just don’t want to. Our people don’t matter to those in charge, especially the young, the old, and the poor.

   France, Britain, Belgium, and probably other countries struggling to recover from the War, all created functioning health care systems in the 1940s when they were virtually bankrupt. It’s a matter of will, and who you care about.

   Sentence 2 is precisely why sentence 1 is false. Don’t they even listen to what they are saying?
