I do have some concerns about SCOTUS rulings at this point in time, even when I agree with the general thrust of the laws in question. The author of the article does at least do a reasonable job of pointing out that the rulings often invoke language that will be used against women in the future. Sotomayor’s dissent is quoted, pointing out that the ruling boils down to, “Well, that’s just how women are”, which could be used to justify blocking women from military academies, fire and police departments, and so on, by resorting to the same generalization based on sex–since women as a whole are shorter and have less upper-body strength, they could be barred from any position that relies on height and muscle power, even if an individual woman is capable of meeting the standards being applied.
I do not, and cannot, trust the 6 fuckhead-appointed Justices on the court, even if they are seeming to be allies here, because I know what their real views on women are.
