“The deep state spear”

Newt Gingrich is getting in on the act too, NPR points out.

There has been an effort on the right to try to undermine Mueller to de-legitimize his potential findings…:

I find that shocking. I keep being shocked by these people. I suppose it’s naïve, but I can’t help it.

… even though some of the same people just a month earlier had been praising the former FBI director for his esteem:

Why Newt, you hypocritical piece of crap you.

Mueller’s investigative team has expanded in recent weeks. The National Law Journal reported on June 9 that Mueller has brought Deputy Solicitor General Michael Dreeben onto the team on a part-time basis. Reporter Tony Mauro noted the addition of Dreeben may signal that “Mueller may be seeking advice on complex areas of criminal law, including what constitutes obstruction of justice.” At the end of May, the chief of the Justice Department’s Fraud Section, Andrew Weissman, also joined the team, NPR’s Carrie Johnson reported at the time.

Justice Department policy is that a sitting president cannot be indicted by a grand jury, the Post also reported Wednesday. Any findings by the department’s investigation would be referred to Congress, where lawmakers would determine whether to impeach the president.

If he doesn’t resign first.

“destroying or at a minimum undermining and crippling the Trump presidency.”

Trump is doing that by himself. He just opens his mouth or presses “post.”

It would be a good thing if there’s enough “deep state” to preserve bits of government operations, institutional memory and the rule of law against the depredations of Trump and his family of swindlers and wreckers.

Based on Mueller’s GOP credentials and service in the Bush maladministration, Newt’s first tweet about Mueller’s impeccable reputation for honesty comes as no surprise. I guess old Newt was caught off guard by a Republican interested in doing his job properly by asking financial questions and putting the lives of Trump and associates under a microscope. So unlike Newt himself.

Robert Mueller is superb choice to be special counsel. His reputation is impeccable for honesty and integrity. Media should now calm down

Translation: Mueller is an excellent choice up until we discover that he is doing his job.

nothing is going to happen to Trump regardless of what is found.

Unless, as I said, he resigns first.

Aww, he’s worried about Trump’s presidency being cippled. Don’t worry, Newt, Donny doesn’t need any help with that.

Kristjan – I suspect he’s more worried about possible damage to the Republican Party if they have another crooked president impeached (or actually, just threatened with impeachment and resign, like Nixon). I don’t think he should worry too much. After Nixon, the party sat out a four year term with a Democratic president, then roared back with Reagan to undo all the good that had been done in the 10 years that preceded his presidency – the party with the crooked president who had to resign was quickly able to dismantle a great deal of our regulatory system, permit Wall Street to run amok, undo the fairness doctrine that allowed conservatives to dominate talk radio and talk TV, take us through a recession, bring us the idea that “greed is good”, and then be remembered by almost everybody as a time of unrelenting prosperity and good times – forgetting the horrors of large scale reduction in force, massive debt, crippling recession, and the loss of most of what remained of family farms, all the while enriching the already rich and disempowering the already poor.
