It’s her fault

Peter Tatchell’s decision to blame feminists for the fact that a man murdered a trans woman continues to annoy everyone who sees it.

What he said:

Tracy Single is 15th trans woman of colour murdered in US this year. The tiny minority of feminists who demonise trans women as a threat to non-trans women contribute to the toxicl atmosphere that fuels prejudice, discrimination & violence

Janice Turner:

A man killed Tracy. It is overwhelmingly men who commit murder and violence against trans people. As they kill far, far greater numbers of women. Yet somehow feminists are the cause of male violence. Why not challenge men, Peter Tatchell? Your misogyny is disgraceful.

Sarah Ditum:

Tracy Single was killed by a man. Not a feminist who accepts sex is real, a man. I’m not sure why Peter is so attached to blaming women for male violence, but it gives the strong impression that he cares more about attacking women than protecting victims.

Holly Lawford-Smith:

was she murdered by a feminist, @PeterTatchell? you absolute muppet.

Julie Bindel

our misogyny is off the scale. MEN kill, rape & abuse trans women, NOT feminists. Neither do we ‘provoke’ such violence. We campaign AGAINST it. One woman is killed every 3 days by ex or current MALE partners for example. To blame us for the actions of violent men is outrageous.

Hadley Freeman:

Are you seriously blaming feminists for male violence, Peter?

It’s not helping him that a man was arrested on suspicion of murdering Tracy Single.

Yeah, the perp is Single’s boyfriend. I highly doubt he was influenced by feminists to do this.

And since black males are one of the highest demographics in the murder roulette, it becomes difficult to state that it is because of being trans. Apparently most of the trans people murdered are black male-to-female, so is it transphobia? Is it racism? Or is it that men murder men all too frequently? By all means, let’s jump to conclusions, and elevate every single murder of a trans-identified male while ignoring the much larger number of females murdered by men, and the still larger number of males murdered by men.

    Statistics. How do they work?

A man was murdered by a man, and a man blames women. Fucking amazing.

Also, a very large percentage of them are prostitutes. Who are also disproportionately at risk of murder.

Few of these men are the victims of transphobic (or, just as likely, homophobic) hate crimes. They are murdered for the same sad reasons other vulnerable people are murdered.

And still there is no evidence that trans people are more at risk of being murdered than anybody else.

Meanwhile the middle class, mostly white people like Tatchell who promote this manipulative, scare-mongering nonsense are safe as houses.

I always found the claim (which I have no reason to believe is untrue) that trans POC were murdered at disproportionately high rates to be strange, as it wasn’t clear why they would be targeted more by transphobes. As iknklast suggests, it just may be demographics. I wonder (but apparently not enough to try to find the numbers) if the black:white murder victim ratio for trans and non-trans people is that different. If not, then there’s no real mystery.

Actually, Skeletor, the murder rate for women is about six times higher than for trans, and the murder rate for men is even higher. The highest murder rate is the black males, murdered by other males (not by transphobes. Maybe racists, but also the same ways other men get murdered).

Of all the trans murders last year (the number the trans activists love to shout) almost all of them were black, male-to-female, prostitutes, as Lady M noted. All these groups have a high murder rate. Suggestive, but only if you understand reality.

As near as I could find, there were 29 trans people murdered in 2017 (last year for which I could find data).

    https://www.hrc.org/resources/violence-against-the-transgender-community-in-2018

If we use the 0.6% percentage of trans people in the US, we get a murder rate of 2.2 per 100,000 people. Almost all of the victims are trans women, so the rate doubles to 4.4% (assuming equal numbers of trans women and trans men). The murder rate for all women is about 2 per 100,000.

I can’t remember exactly where I saw the data – I’ll try to look for it later – but that doesn’t jibe with the figures I read. If I can find it, I’ll post it.

But we aren’t allowed to notice that, since Sex Work is officially empowering and only nasty SWERFs dare suggest otherwise.

If lower class trans women are at extra physical and economic risk due to being shunned by their homophobic families and communities. And if ‘sex work’ involves dangerous encounters with unstable, toxic, men…

Death rate of prostitutes is 204 per 100,000.

    https://www.hg.org/legal-articles/prostitution-in-the-united-states-30997

This is 50% higher than the mortality rate from logging (135.9 per 100,000), which has the highest such rate among legal occupations.
