As soon as I saw Trump’s tweet starting out with the words “Ralph Waldo Emerson” I knew it was a quote.
And more precisely, a quote of someone else quoting Emerson…and then
So he quotes an item, which itself contains a quote, that he thinks supports his case. It actually undercuts and ridicules it, and tellingly reveals that Trump sees himself as a king. His inability to see any of this makes his use of it even worse. So the actual tweeting of the quote and the quote-within-the-quote highlights and broadcasts his ignorance and lack of comprehension of both. It’s like a hat-trick of own goals. Wow. If you tried packing any more lack of self-awareness into so few words, you’d acheive a critical mass of vacuity that would suck everything into non-existance.
Stunning, isn’t it? “Hey look everybody Peter Alexander at the Times called me a petulant vindictive paranoid brat! So awesome!”
How could Trump not know about Emerson? After all he’s getting recognized more and more.
