Create obstacles

Ya that’s not good.

Now, this happened in my neighborhood years ago – suddenly there were a lot fewer mailboxes and one had to hike to drop something in the mail. I had to hike last week to drop my vote in the mail. I was very annoyed by it at the time, and still am, but back then it wasn’t part of a vote suppression move. Now is not a good time to be removing mail boxes, even if these were on some kind of long-term schedule for removal.

We haven’t seen any mailboxes disappear yet. But then, our town is like 95% white. (It’s a boring, conservative, oppressive, repressive town, and I plan to be out of here as soon as I can retire.)

I haven’t seen a neighborhood mailbox in YEARS, decades, even.

When I first moved into my current apartment the card shop next door had a small post office in the back, and there was a mailbox like the ones pictured above out in front. For the first few years I could tell it was 15 April (last day to file taxes in the US) by the endless creaks and clanks, often right up until midnight (and perhaps later since I would be going to bed by then). It disappeared not long after the card shop closed and the PO moved a couple blocks to another business location, about 10 years ago or so.

Growing up I remember seeing mailboxes almost every other block, even in the outer mostly residential neighborhoods. They started disappearing right about when I started paying all my bills online.
