This is funny if true, and may explain the tweet storm above.
There’s an opinion piece in the NY Times worth reading: 1918 Germany Has a Warning for America. In it, the author is pointing out the similarities with the Dolchstosslegende, or stab-in-the-back myth, of post-WW1 Germany. That paved the way for the end of the Weimar republic and the rise of Hitler.
It may seem overblown, but “it can’t happen here, because that is just unthinkable” is another dangerous myth, albeit a comforting one. “History doesn’t repeat itself, but it often rhymes.” (Mark Twain? Probably not, but well said.)
