Actually I think “y’all’ is one of the best things to come out of the US south.
Having two distinct words for 2nd person singular and 2nd person plural is a useful distinction.

I recall being informed that “y’all” is the singular and “all y’all” is the plural. I don’t remember from where in the US south the person who informed me of this was from.

I’ve seen that definition in a book on how to talk Texan. I have seen it disputed by people I know from Texas, though.
