Yes, it’s utterly astonishing to me, still, that making a true statement — “You realize that you will be putting [male] rapists into women’s prisons” — has no effect. It evokes no hesitancy, no acknowledgment, no pause for thought whatsoever. It’s like you said nothing or made no point. Women don’t matter, and women prisoners REALLY don’t matter. They don’t come into the equation; they make no blip on the radar.

The merest grain of empathy, however, should lead to the immediate conclusion that it is no part of a woman’s sentence to be subjected to male violence in prison. I have no idea why that doesn’t even register.

    formatting question:

I’ve got down how to make a quotation with the “blockquote” signals [with brackets].

What are the mechanics of making italics or bold print?

    “Will”?

They already have, including at least one child rapist in a prison with a mother-and-baby unit.

Jeepers, I guess I don’t have it down. I thought by leaving spaces between the < and the "blockquote" that the format wouldn't be triggered. Evidently, I was wrong.

    @ maddog:

Italics are created by putting em between the < and its opposite at the beginning, and /em between the < and its opposite at the end, of the part you wish to have in italics.

To bold text, substitute the em with the word strong.

maddog @ 4 – just i between brackets for italics and b for bold.

Never mind formatting errors; I can’t English. I lost track of how I planned to end that last sentence, and ended it in a different way. I should have used replace instead of substitute.

Ophelia, it may have changed, but back in the olden times, text readers couldn’t manage i and b. I got into the habit of using em and strong so that people relying on readers could hear the difference.

I forgot which composer gave up writing “program music” because he said the audience could not hear the difference between a fork and a spoon.

By the way, my comment #6 has an in-joke. Konstantin Kisin says “facts and logic”. Francis Foster plays the fool and misquotes him as “logic and facts”. KK pretends to hate FF getting KK backwards. They banter.

But seriously, Helen Joyce has a PhD in math, and sees the logical consequences of a system.

I struggle with the concept that this has to do with people not caring about prisoners. If that were the case, why would anyone give a fuck about how difficult it is for transwomen in prison?

I would be fine with the statement “People don’t care about prisoners, unless they claim to be the opposite sex”, because obviously people do seem to care about male prisoners who wear lipstick and stiletto heels.

Why don’t so many people seem to care about male rapists in women’s prisons?

    Spitballing here:

    1) The Boiling Frog Effect

    “That won’t happen.”

“It’s only going to be a very few, very committed TW.”

    “TW are practically women.”

    “TW are women.”

2.) The Orange Is the New Black Effect:

“I just loved Laverne Cox as Sophia, one of my favorite characters.”

“Wasn’t it awful when she was sent to Max?”

“I mean, she wasn’t dangerous or anything but that’s how they treated her.”

“I wouldn’t want to be responsible for doing that to another Sophia in real life.”

3.) The Conservative Playing the Rapist Card Effect:

    “Trans is a liberal issue.”

“Someone mentioned ‘rapist’ and ‘trans’ together.”

“Conservatives do that with black men — remember George Bush and Willie Horton?”

    “Not going there.”

I think there’s more than enough evidence to support the concept that this has to do with people not caring about women. Otherwise all those trans activists so concerned about women’s shelter’s, women’s sports, women’s spaces, women’s positions and opportunities wouldn’t care about them at all, if they weren’t so determined (and successful) to get men into them.

Dave @ 11 thanks for the explanation! I had no clue but didn’t like to ask…

I have watched and listened to a number of Helen’s interviews in the last two weeks, as it happens. The youtube algorithm just kept suggesting new ones, and I kept watching them. I have already listened to her audiobook.

2 or three years ago she was quite agreeable and willing to compromise on something we could all agree on, a year ago she was polite and trying to moderate her criticisms.

Now she is clearly (and rightly) furious and is saying what she really thinks. It really mirrors my own journey, I could never match Helen’s intellect, of course, but I can understand her journey through the stages of her emotions.

Same. The parade of colleagues lining up to throw shit at me at Freethought blogs did wonders for making me give up trying to be agreeable.

That may not help so much, because this blog, like every blog that accepts comments using HTML markup, will strip off all HTML tags except for some set of supposedly safe ones. And which ones that is, will vary between blogs.

I really don’t know which tags will be accepted here. How about the “s” tag, for example? It should produce strikeout ← trying it here. I think it suppresses the “br” tag too, for line breaks.← Here is one.
