Flippant tautology is flippant

Staggering. MSP asks Sturgeon if a rapist who “changed their gender after being charged by the police” should be considered a woman, and her oh so cute answer is that a rapist should be considered a rapist.

But that’s not the question. We already consider a rapist a rapist; the question is whether we consider a man who is a rapist a woman.

Sturgeon may have breached her own party’s definition of transphobia:

“Xenogender “can be defined as a gender identity that references “ideas and identities outside of gender”: This may include descriptions of gender identity in terms of “their first name or as a real or imaginary animal” or “texture, size, shape, light, sound, or other sensory characteristics.”

“Rapist” therefore seems to be a kind of gender, not dissimilar to the more familiar gender of being a Cloud.

For Women Scotland made a statement:

It appears that Nicola Sturgeon has concluded there are three sexes — male, female and rapist. Of course, a tiny number of rapes are ever reported, let alone prosecuted. Does the ‘rapist’ gender wear off after time served and will Graham [Bryson] be in a women’s changing room thereafter?

Sturgeon is known for riding out terrible, ill-thought out legislation like the Named Person bill and the Offensive Behaviour at Football Act. She rode out the scandal with Alec Salmond, her predecessor, being charged with various counts of sexual assault and then acquitted. She has ridden out constantly promising a referendum and never delivering. Many people are predicting she won’t ride this one out – but I do wonder. There’s nowhere else for her to go and she’s only 52. The bets have been on her trying to get a big NGO job after retiring from front line politics, but she has had a couple of bad run-ins now with the UN, and her govt has had a record of ineptitude. She’s not a big enough fish to coin it on the speaking tour circuit. Perhaps she will hang on.

She normally has good political instincts. It’s astonishing how she has run with this when she must have seen how unpopular the Gender Recognition bill has been. It does seem to be a sincere commitment on her part.

@iknlast – I didn’t notice the pun until you pointed it out!

Oh lord – there are two puns. I didn’t intend either of them. Sturgeon and flippant. BOTH ACCIDENTS.
