There was a good article in Reduxx last month about how this has been going on for nearly a decade in fencing.

Having fenced, I’ll attest that the male advantage holds in swordplay, even excluding differences in height and length.

According to another female fencer, most competitors have been completely unaware they are dueling a man

If this is really true, which I doubt, they are very unobservant. Male-pattern chin, male-pattern brow ridge &c &c

    NightCrow,

Yabbut, … don’t they wear those fencing masks? (Not all the time I know.)

Also a former fencer. Male reach, aggression, typically greater explosive power. Epee especially can be extremely physical at times (in the 80s and 90s women were not allowed to fence it at all). As a novice fencer of 1-2 years I was able to regularly beat one of our regions then best female fencers at epee for those reasons.
