Winning by default raises too many uncomfortable questions which are avoided or sidestepped if the girls “willingly” participate in the violation of their rights. Like Old Bolsheviks testifying against themselves in their own Stalinist show-trials, the girls’ competing against this boy signifies acquiescence to their own defeat, accepting the “justness” of the officially sanctioned cheating, legitimating the “normalcy” of an abnormal state of affairs that victimizes them. Likely there would be official consequences for the girls if they forfeited in protest. It’s infuriating that the officiating adults failed in their duty to protect these girls, and instead prioritized the desires of this boy (and his mother).
