A thumb

I’m twelve minutes into this –

And what I’m thinking is…even if you think 60 Minutes is bad or too old or boring or whatever, what is the point of being aggressively rude and dismissive toward the people behind it? What is that for? What purpose does it serve?

I have to admit I don’t watch it myself. I used to occasionally, but I did get tired of it. It started to seem a tad self-important, so I wonder if that’s how it struck the New Bosses too. To put it another way maybe they really do have reasonable ideas about how it could be improved. But even if they do and it could, why be assholes about it? Especially since it was in fact highly popular?

I don’t know what the answer is. Maybe it’s just sadism plus trumpism.

The show’s popularity is likely an embarassment to CBS’s new ownership’s corporate agenda. Or to put it another way, the show’s ethos runs counter to the new ownership’s corporate agenda, which is decidedly Trump-friendly. Being Trump-friendly or Trump-apologist runs counter to most of what America was once supposed to stand for. Having employees publicly resisting corporate policy would be counter-productive and inconvenient. Hello constructive dismissal and plain old firing. By keeping the show’s name, while gutting its staff and subverting its mission, the network can pretend to retain the trappings and facade of journalistic integrity, while becoming another mouthpiece for Trump. One less team asking pointed questions, one more propaganda organ spouting Trump talking points.
