Prematurely morphing

Foreign Policy says Trump has lost his mojo.

Trump, now focused more on ballrooms and pools than on the Nobel Peace Prize he lobbied for just one year ago, only has himself to blame for prematurely morphing into something resembling a lame duck. The chief cause is surely his decision in February to go to war against Iran. More than six months in, the conflict has drained U.S. resources, raised the cost of living, and turned Trump into one of the most unpopular presidents in recorded history.

Baffling, when wars of choice are usually so much fun.

Trump’s once loyal cabinet officials are now telling reporters that their boss ignored their concerns about attempting regime change in Iran.

The war has almost irreparably damaged Trump’s foreign-policy toolkit. Short on both offensive and defensive missiles, Trump can no longer dangle the possibility of changing battlefield dynamics in Ukraine, a conflict he promised to end in one day, or provide a suitable deterrent to China’s ambitions in Taiwan. The hard realities of a slow industrial base will severely constrain his ability to project power. Inflation, made worse first by tariffs and then by the war’s impact on gas prices, will stymie his decision-making at home and abroad.

Yes but besides that…

The friendships Trump has chosen to trample on—from Canada to Europe to India—were in fact Washington’s secret sauce, the one thing Beijing couldn’t manufacture. In squandering those partnerships, Trump has accelerated the diffusion of U.S. power as well as the process of his own declining influence.

He had a lot of fun trampling though. That’s the important thing.

Yes, and this is when he is at his most dangerous. As his “Rally in Dally” showed, he is not going to easily give up the power in Congress and some have suggested that he will have Mike Johnson refuse to relinquish seats that Democrats win in January.

He said “Cheat Like Hell” to his acolytes, and they’ll try. We don’t know what the USPS chiefs are going to do to mess with mail in ballots. We can assume that he will send ICE to stand exactly 100 feet from polling places in critical areas, and some of them will provoke protests.

This coming election is a day when our democracy, or “constitutional republic” is going to be vulnerable and I know many people are worried, including me.

I think a lot of people in the US haven’t quite grasped the extent to which they’ve lost the rest of the world. Even if we didn’t like things that the US did, we could work with them, understand them, make predictions. That’s gone, because even though Trump can’t get a third term without serious shenanigans and won’t live forever anyway, the people who voted for him aren’t going anywhere. At this point any agreement or deal or initiative made with the US is subject to the understanding that every four years a bad roll of the dice means we get Eagleland Pol Pot.

Which, of course, he is willing to do.

The scarier part is the fact that the people who vote for him will still be out there. They will…and I don’t necessarily agree with the talking heads who claim Trumpism will die with Trump. I think it has moved beyond Trump, and there are others who can dish out his brand of brain-impaired corruption and childish populism.

iknklast: that’s what I mean. Remember how bad GWB was, and think of how much worse Trump is. Then apply that logarithm to whoever comes after Trump.

That not quite grasping thing – I spend so much time grasping it all over again, with horror and rage and disgust. The new normal is so abnormal it’s as hard to grasp as a live wet fish coated with olive oil.

I suppose that’s why I keep posting about Trump even though we all know it already a thousand times over.
