sez Jo

Jolyon taking on Goliath again.

(Why does he sign his posts “Jo Maugham”? Why so matey? We’re not your mates, mate.)

Billionaires like JK Rowling have funded a blizzard of legal attacks on the trans community – and her allies in the rightwing and far-right press have pursued a campaign of trans hate, says Jo Maugham

Why do you talk about yourself in the third person, “Jo”? We all know there is no higher-up person writing this blurb; we know it’s you; so y u talk about yourself as “Jo Maugham”? It’s cringey.

The day the Supreme Court handed down its decision on the meaning of sex under the Equality Act was the last day Anna*, a woman in her 30s, was seen or heard from. She took herself into her room, locked the door from the inside, and took her own life.

What do you mean she took herself into her room? You make her sound like a child. What room? Was a room all she had? Why was there a lock on the door, and why couldn’t it be unlocked from outside? Are you trying to up the poignancy dosage?

The notorious judgment was handed down on 16 April 2025. It followed a process in which the Supreme Court refused to hear from any trans people, ignored its legal obligation under the Human Rights Act to consider their human rights, and came to a decision without hearing any challenge to patently false findings of fact.

What does “hearing from trans people” have to do with anything? If I claim to be Jolyon Maugham, do I then have a right to be “heard from” when you say I’m not?

Anna’s death is a profound tragedy for those who loved her. But it is also merely one drop in an ocean of trans suicidality. Billionaires like JK Rowling have funded a blizzard of legal attacks on the trans community – and in tandem her allies in the rightwing and far-right press have pursued a campaign of trans hate.

Worse still is how, in a shift reminiscent of apartheid South Africa, public bodies have joined the hunt.

Blah blah blah, the usual stuff, repeated until he gets to the end.

Emotional blackmail chapter XIXVLXII… If you’re prepared to go on living only on the condition that other people give up their rights (or pretend to believe absurdities), suicide might indeed be the answer for you…

Bjarte Foshaug: shades of “…and if you don’t name the Kennedy Center after me, I’ll RIP IT DOWN and THEN you’ll be sorry!”

Thanks “Jo” for the reiteration of the translation that “protecting women’s rights” = “trans hate.” Reversing this equivalence gives us “protecting rans ‘rights’” = “misogyny.” Not that you haven’t gone to great effort to make the latter quite clear, still it’s good to know that you now this.
