Facebook standards

Clementine Ford on Facebook:

Catherine Deveny has just been given a 30 day ban for posting this status. Something like this is removed while posts celebrating violence against women are just a laugh m8.

Maybe if Dev had made a horrible joke about rape or beating women, it would have been considered okay by the ‘community standards’.

Facebook Community Standards are a sour joke.

    Facebook community standards are, in fact, the standards of the community. They throw into sharp relief societal mores. So, yes, of course this is unacceptable when posts referencing violence against women are acceptable. This is the culture we live in.

    Facebook itself is a massive joke. I didn’t join for a long time, but given that some of my favourite news & commentary sites are ditching comment sections I relented.

    I suspect FB is using a similar algorithm to Twitter, where complaints are weighed against the popularity of a particular page. This is why atheist FB pages struggle against the sheer numbers of Muslim users willing to file a complaint; I guess the same thing happened here with MRAs.

    Still, when you single out a group and link it directly to a negative trait, you run the risk of the host pulling the plug. Deveny of all people should know this, but the lack of consistency is the irritating thing.

    May be the algorithm will accept with an adjective, say “young men”

    What does the comment that “Deveny, of all people, should know this” mean? What do you mean to indicate about Deveny’s behavior?

    @Josh:

    She’s shitting on one half of the population; it doesn’t have the same weight and implications as the reverse and she’s mostly right, but she’s still shitting on one half of the population.

    There’s no question her post doesn’t meet community standards; what is questionable is how on earth it’s remotely possible that other hate postings *do* meet community standards.

    #5 Blood Knight: It is inarguable that men commit the vast, vast, vast, vast majority of violence in the world. It is not “shitting” on you to point that out. Come the fuck on.

    Your comment is “not all men” at its worst.

    I find that hard to take as a serious complaint, Blood Knight. And I wasn’t asking you. I was asking justinr what he meant.

    Jesus, I’m not “not all men”ing; I seriously don’t give a fuck about that stupid gender/tribal garbage. Take it as you will but what I outlined is EXACTLY why the post was taken down (no doubt assisted by the same overreporting tactics that Islamists use to gank atheist Facebook stuff).

    @Cressida:

    Also, nothing Catherine Deveny says harms me. Whereas you decided to attack me personally, which was totally not cool… dis tribe/class man all you want (you should) but I am not your enemy nor am I deserving of being personally shat on.

    Well I don’t know how you know that’s why the post was taken down.

    The logic of what Deveny said is not “all men cause violence” but “most violence is caused by men.” Those are very different. The men causing the violence can be a tiny minority of men and it’s still true that most of it is caused by men.

    Oh, come on. By the same logic:

    The top ten causes of terrorism — muslims, muslims, muslims, muslims, muslims…

    “Men” is not a “cause” of violence. Poverty, anger, jealousy, ambition, hate, social conditioning, whatever, are causes of violence.

    GUYS. Seriously, please check out #notallmen. You’re starting to embarrass yourselves.

    When compared with other stuff on Facebook, this seems to be pretty harmless. It is so harmless that it qualifies neatly as a Deepity (http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Deepity)
