Let’s not get carried away

It’s a day to rejoice, it’s a day to breathe a massive sigh of relief, it’s a day even to celebrate. It’s not a day to congratulate ourselves. That day is a long way off.

Like this.

I admire Norm Eisen, but I reject that punchline “America.” It would be pretty to think so, but no. We remember what happened there just two weeks ago, and we know the people who did it are still out there, along with a lot of allies who didn’t make it to the Capitol but nevertheless think the insurrection was awesome. No, we’re not All Better Now. No, Trumpism has not received its death blow. No, this isn’t all over. No, we don’t now stand for all that is good and just and reasonable and decent. It’s not that easy.

Well, I for one am over the moon that now, any time Trump does something stupid, the headline can read, “Florida man…”

An acquaintance of mine has been saying all year that when Trump is out and the Democratic candidate is in, the COVID-19 pandemic will end, like magic, and never return, and everything will be good.

Just goes to show that people on the Democratic side of the aisle can be as naïve and silly as people on the Republican side. Also: Does this person realize that there are countries other than the US, and there’s COVID-19 there, too?

“Life wasn’t meant to be easy.” An Australian PM said that. But I’ve forgotten his name.

GW, that reminds me of all the people who couldn’t wait for 2020 to be over so ‘we can get back to normal’, as though a change of year would make everything better by magic.

That’s the human flaw though, isn’t it? Believing in stories.

Covid is probably going to be with us for some time if I understand things correctly, we’ll just be able to manage it.

BKiSA, like the flu, which was pandemic a hundred years ago, and now we manage it, though it does still kill a lot of people. We manage it imperfectly, but we manage it. And COVID will likely be the same, especially since so many people are refusing vaccination. Even with everybody vaccinated, it would be imperfect control; the lack of control goes up the more people that don’t follow the recommended guidelines.

Yeah, I’ve always thought that was kinda naive to expect the new year to make a difference. Just like the fact that I don’t feel older on my birthday than I did the day before; it’s a gradual process.

That would be the late and unlamented John Malcolm Fraser, the man who DID stage a successful coup against the elected government ( with a little help from his foreign friends). The man who, like Trump, wanted the top job, but had no idea what do with it. The man who, like Trump, was born into wealth and privilege and didn’t have to work hard to be wealthy. The man who destroyed Medibank, our first decent universal healthcare scheme.

But for a little light humour, he was found dazed, confused, and pantless in a seedy Memphis hotel.

    Who hasn’t?

On the same steps where a mob of insurrectionists invited by Trump attacked the government, a peaceful transition.

How is this not a contradiction? How has the transition been peaceful? You can’t just start counting from the day after the last violent insurrection. Can you?

I can see the signs at the airports now.

Welcome to the USA. It has been 14 days since our last violent insurrection.
