Within the limits

Taliban says women can have all the rights Islam allows.

Yes, we know, that’s not even worth reporting. Of course they say that. All the rights Islam allows to women add up to

ZERO.

The Taliban’s Islam at any rate. Of course people can invent their own Islams, but it’s idiotic or cynical to think the Taliban’s Islam is anything but a life sentence for all women. No freedom no education no choice. Women are objects to be owned by men and beaten or killed if they step out of line in any way.

Taliban say they will guarantee women’s rights under the ‘limits of Islam’ following takeover of Afghanistan

Rich and poor alike are free to live under bridges.

During a Tuesday press conference, a Taliban spokesperson pledged that the new government would protect women’s rights “within the limits of Islam,” according to Sky News and other outlets

Which means no rights at all.

Women and girls will have the righ to submit not only to the authority of Allah, but also to their husbands and uncles and any Morality Police who find reason to abuse them.

They are now asking for the names of single women, and I think we all know what they intend to do with their lists.

    As “Titania McGrath” tweeted:

Now that the white western colonisers have left Afghanistan, the Taliban can get on with implementing their progressive intersectional feminist policies.

    Oh jeezus.

(They were already doing it Sunday – handing women over to their troops.)

Someone asked a woman journalist in Kabul if “this” Taliban might be different from the “old” Taliban, and what should we expect: “They’re lying, murderous drug dealers, and we should expect the same thing as the last time they were in power.”

It was, in a sad way, refreshing. I’m so sick of hearing people say “Well, they’ve promised to good this time around.”

I imagine this time will be different; they’ve got two decades of pent up additional rage and have no doubt invented new cruelties to inflict upon people and women especially.

gary was that on Womans Hour yesterday? A woman journalist said something very similar (or maybe identical) there. No doubt there are hundreds of woman journalists saying it.

They’re just making up for lost time, making the point rather viscerally the futility of waging “war” naively, half-heartedly, and most of all comfortably.

“Death. Destruction. Disease. Horror. That’s what war is all about. … That’s what makes it a thing to be avoided. You’ve made it neat and painless. So neat and painless, you’ve had no reason to stop it. And you’ve had it–for five hundred years. Since it seems to be the only way … I’m going to end it for you, one way or another …”

“Do you realize what you’ve done?”

“Yes, I do. I’ve given you back the horrors of war.”

Its the same as the ‘no compulsion in Islam’ lie. Everyone gets a free choice:

    a) convert

    b) pay protection

    c) be killed
