Several people have remarked that the vast majority of the negative comments about this event are criticisms of the way some of the women look and dress, many of them along these lines. I don’t think I’d fully appreciated until quite recently just how much hatred there is for butch lesbians from all directions. I knew it existed, to be sure, I’ve had butch lesbian friends for most of my life, but I don’t think I’d realised quite how ubiquitous and relentless it is.

This wasn’t Willoughby’s only tweet about this lunch. There’s this, for instance:

and another calling for ‘band names’ for that same picture, clearly inviting ridicule.

Also, a relatively minor thing but just another slab of dishonest language from the tweet I linked to.

You wouldn’t be banned India, you just wouldn’t be invited. And not just because you’re a man.

Butch lesbian or not, a number of older women would look ‘masc’ with short hair and no makeup.

Sure. The woman in question does happen to be a butch lesbian, though. I should probably have made that clear.

Interesting, Mr. Willoughby appears to believe there is a difference of appearance between female humans and male humans pretending to be female.

I honestly snickered at his comment. “I don’t get it.” That’s right, you don’t, Willoughby, and you’ve styled your entire life around your inability to comprehend this simplest of facts, that women are not defined by their appearance or behavior. Slather on all the lipstick you want, and tilt your head comingly for the camera, sir–you’ll still never be a woman.

I know. “You don’t say!! Of course you don’t get it, you putz, that’s what we’ve been telling you all along.”

I think Willoughby really does believe that the opposition’s stance is grounded in matters of appearance. It’s hard to fathom that someone could be told something hundreds if not thousands of times yet somehow remember hearing the opposite, but …
