Your daily reminder

This may be the stupidest ever.

Here’s your daily reminder that the universe is made of custard.

Here’s your daily reminder that sheep have 47 legs.

Here’s your daily reminder that Thomas Jefferson got a PhD in astrophysics at Stanford.

Here’s your daily reminder that it takes 5 hours to walk from Boston to San Diego.

In short, no, not everyone gets abortions. Let’s break this down to make it easy to grasp: there’s a whole large category of people who can’t get abortions, so that’s those people off the list right at the start. Here’s the funny thing: they’re roughly half of all people, so our tweeter made quite a big mistake!

Ok so roughly half of all people – men – can’t get abortions. Nor can either sex before puberty, for that matter, so the category of people who can get them (leaving aside for the moment whether they do or not) is post-puberty females.

And then there’s another big category, which is women who are happy to be pregnant, and thus don’t need or want abortions unless there’s a serious medical issue.

So who gets abortions? Women and girls who want or need to stop being pregnant and have access to abortions. It’s a pretty small fraction of everyone really.

And another group that doesn’t get abortions: Post-menopausal women. Though of course, some of them might have during their youth, that group is not going to get abortions.

Also, fairy tale monsters. I never heard of a fairy tale monster having an abortion.

Here’s your daily reminder that non-binary refers specifically and exclusively to gender, by way of the supposed lack thereof, and is therefore “gendered language.”

Happy Non-binary Awareness Week! Here’s your daily reminder that sure, you reject a lot of gendered expectations and don’t fit neatly on any Masculine-Feminine scale BUT NOT THE WAY REAL NON-BINARY PEOPLE DO THEY FEEL THINGS MORE DEEPLY THAN YOU WHO WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND HOW OFF THE SCALE THEY REALLY ARE STOP ERASING THEIR EXPERIENCES BY COMPARING THEM TO YOUR OWN SHALLOW EXISTENCE. Thanks — and have a nice day!

Well, shit, I’ve never had an abortion.

What the hell’s wrong with me?

    (Hint: no uterus.)

Also: “Binary” is a bullshit term, a straw man/person/gal/thing.

Sex ain’t binary, we know that, it’s bimodal, or, better, dimorphic, with most people clustering at one pole or the other.

So calling oneself “non-binary” is kind of pointless and stupid, like calling yourself “non-marsupial.”

    @Mike B;

A binary is a conceptual hierarchy which is formed by taking a term with a dominant positive value and creating a subordinate value by negating the privileged qualities of the dominant term. Masculine/Feminine is a binary. In fact, it is the ur-binary, to the extent that ALL of the binary pairs which structure Western thought (mind/body, reason/emotion, thought/sensation, universal/particular, one/many etc.) are gendered, and without exception, the ‘positive’ pole of the binary is masculine. Male and female is not a binary, it is a natural difference. (Jane Clare Jones)

Elsewhere, I’ve seen sex referred to as a “binary.”

Sex is binary because for sexual reproduction to occur two kinds of gametes are required: egg and sperm.

I usually use “sexual dimorphism” —

Systematic differences between the two sexes of a gonochoristic species of a physical characteristic (or set thereof), not including reproductive anatomy. (Emma Hilton)

    — but I kind of like JCJ’s take on it because a “gender binary” is obviously something to avoid.

I was initially excited about this week long celebration since it promised to remind people that there was more to life than 0s and 1s. Alas…

I recall a tweet from some TIM in which he was eager to get a womb transplant (whenever such a thing might be possible) so he could have an abortion. Imagine that; not interested in a womb transplant so he could bear a child, but rather so he could avoid bearing a child, something he could easily do by not getting this hypothetical womb transplant.

MIke B, people’s bodies are bimodal, as there are some individuals that have say a genetic mutation which causes them to have traits of both at once. But sex itself, the reproductive strategy, is binary as there are only two. Some sexually reproducing species have some really strange quirks in how those sexes play out (“sea horses, therefor sex isn’t binary!” etc.), but not humans.

I’m surprised that so many computer programmmers and techies are in the trans camp since they depend on undersanding binaries for their work.

Mike, maybe if people looked like 0s and 1s…except, you could sort of make the argument that their genitals do.
