Sastra, even though I can’t find that phrase in the body of the article, I think that is a direct quote rather than a scare quote. They should probably used ” ” instead of ‘ ‘, but even that is not automatically clear.
Yeah, that reads like a quote of a line from the police report. Does nothing to diminish the evil absurdity of the headline, of course.
And at the risk of beating a dead horse, this is why we have to remember that the Daily Mail, FOX, etc, must never be given the benefit of the doubt, even on the trans issues–they aren’t friends to feminists, even if they are occasionally proving the adage of the stopped clock.
I sometimes use the Mail as a source for factual items because there is no other source, but I always make clear that it’s the Mail.
